It filled the room with a chorus of emotions. Some people, while others were gasping, were smiling. As well as tears, there was some cheering. Daniella goes to various churches with her grandmother. However, Daniella loved to help her grandma out in any way she could, so she would help cook for the church of her grandmother or even help organize events. Daniella was always looked at fondly by the older woman and treated her granddaughter with kindness. Two people tried to exploit her kind nature. They thought that they could get away with such a nasty trick.

Grandmother Edith, a devout worshipper, had been attending the same church for nearly five decades. She went to an Evangelical church in a suburb located in the Bible Belt of the South. By putting in her share of hours, she made sure to do her part for her church. Every Sunday, she was in the nursery and would organize events and cook breakfasts and dinners. She taught children for Youth Bible Study even on Sunday nights.

Also, Edith would give the church a portion of her pension each month. A truly generous individual, she wanted to help the church in any way she could. Daniella even remembered Edith driving from their retreat to the city to get some evangelical equipment forgotten by her pastor. It wasn’t until Edith got back to the retreat the next morning. She hasn’t even received a simple thank you.

This greatly annoyed Daniella. Pastor James, Pastor McConnel’s advisor, had no idea that it was Edith who picked up the slack each time he slipped up. Daniella might say, though, that her grandmother didn’t really mind that much. Edith was always positive and would tell her granddaughter that the one who would repay her generosity would be Jesus. Regardless, Daniella felt terrible that her grandma was getting this kind of treatment.

Edith, unfortunately, had an accident. She could do little else at her age other than lie in bed. She also had several slowly emerging health problems. Because of these things, Edith became more reclusive, and Daniella could only watch the changes in her grandmother unfold. For ten years, Edith had been confined to the inside of her home, and a long time had passed since she last went to her local church. She still tried her best to reach out to individuals, however. Unfortunately, her offers were rudely dismissed. And Daniella has seen all this.

Edith’s body may have been slowly deteriorating, but her mind was still powerful. She always mentally trained herself every day and never drank alcohol. Even though her family tried their best to stay close to her, they could say that Edith was truly sad that she could not worship in church. When the older woman went to the hospice, she felt like she was near the end of her life. Perhaps this was why she was adamant about organizing her funeral service. During this time, the real side of the pastor showed up.

When her grandmother’s pastor, James, said he couldn’t help her and would rather send his subordinate, Daniella clenched her fists. He told her this after he made her wait for several days. Pastor McConnel was the one who came over. Obviously, because of her prior experience with him, he was not her first choice. He went straight to what Edith wanted at her service, speeding over the courtesies, and then, he brought up a particular subject-her will. In his eyes, there was a glint.

There was a lot of speculation about how much money Edith had saved during her lifetime. The church apparently heard about this as well. Something said by Pastor McConnel made Daniella shake with anger. However, her grandfather stepped in with rage in his eyes before she could speak her mind. This is what the pastor said: “Lay up your treasure in Heaven by remembering your church in your will.”

Edith’s husband told Pastor McConnel that talking about money during that time was inappropriate. The pastor then smiled at Edith and spoke about the service by taking a step back and rethinking his approach. He didn’t stop trying to slip the subject of money into their conversation, however. It was quite apparent that this was what really interested the pastor. Then, something happened that once again had Daniella shaking with range.

Her grandma cried. Throughout the years, the family had grown to appreciate that Edith wasn’t a “Steel Magnolia” but was more like “Titanium Coated With Diamond, Wrapped In Kevlar.” Even though she shed tears for other people, she had never done it for herself. At that time, however, the frail woman cried her eyes out. This is why the pastor was forcibly kicked out by Daniella’s grandfather, a Korean War combat veteran and former Marine Sergeant. Six months later, they saw the conversation’s final results … and Edith’s incredible payback.

The family was heartbroken when Grandma Edith passed. At the funeral, however, there were a lot of happy stories and laughter shared. The pastors were not invited upon request but were told to come to read the will. They were both asked to sit in front of the room, where the whole family could see them. “The Reading of the Will” became something like a tradition to Daniella’s family, an excuse for everybody to get together for a “family reunion.” This took place in a conference room located in the office of the lawyer. To the rafters, the room was packed. There were great aunts, great uncles, great uncles, great aunts, great uncles, and many grandchildren. However, special seats facing the room, abuzz with excitement, were given to the two pastors. There were rumors that there were a few ‘surprises’ in the will.

It became apparent when the will was read that the generosity of Edith remained well past her passing. As well as substantial gifts of money, everyone received mementos. Then the church’s turn came. As they were thinking about their share of Edith’s estate, the pastors were looking ravenous. The older woman was, after all, a long-time member of their church. The lawyer took out a letter that had been drafted specifically for them by the grandmother.

Grandma Edith’s letter read, “For the past 10 years, NOT ONE person has ever called me, come to visit me, or sent me a note to tell me that they cared about me. Not one minister, not one deacon, not one of the church women, not one of the church members who I worked with for all of those years, loved dearly and thought were my friends.” She added, “I worked very hard for you when you needed me, for many, many years. But when I needed you and your church, you all pretended that I didn’t exist.” Near the back, Daniella was trying her best to contain her giggles.

The letter then exposed all of the pastors’ poor conduct and greed. Edith described how when they were trying to take her money. The two had only shown interest. Edith’s letter continued, “I realized that I had allowed my church to break my heart for one last time. But that was the last time. The VERY last time.” However, because the next portion was the payback, this was not the end of the letter.

The lawyer then resumed reading the letter. “Pastor McConnel did not know it when he visited me, but Grandpa and I had already prepared my will, long before his visit, which did include a double tithe – twenty percent – of my ENTIRE ESTATE, for what was now my former church. But I felt bad that we had not personally remembered such nice people as Pastor James and Pastor McConnel. So I changed my will to include them by name. While I was at it, I changed the amount of money that I left to the church.”

The family was struggling to contain their smiles. There was one more strike, however. Edith’s grandma was not finished.

The lawyer continued, “There is one last bequest,” pausing for dramatic effect. By then, all the eyes in the room were fixed on the pastors who, after Grandma Edith served them a brutal comeuppance from the grave, were doing their best to compose themselves. As Daniella and her family tried to hold their laughter, they knew that this was just Grandma Edith’s way of setting the two greedy pastors up for a one-two punch.

Upon hearing the enormous amount that her grandmother initially planned to leave the church, Daniella nearly fell out of her chair. When the lawyer named a different congregation, she listened in awe. That was the moment when the pastors’ eyes widened. The pastors’ faces changed from looking unbelievable to a look of pure horror. Grandma Edith taught these two pastors a lesson they’re never going to forget.

Both Grandma Edith and Grandpa fought against it for years and even thought about leaving the church because of it. However, they reasoned that by example and their words, the best thing they could do was stay and teach tolerance. Edith ultimately made sure to teach one final lesson, which had the whole family nodding in agreement.

It simultaneously labeled them as racists, condemned their bigotry, and crushed their delusions of white superiority.”
