When Kaydon went missing in April 2018, it was on a warm evening. The six-year-old boy is said to have mysteriously vanished. His parents mistook him for a kid playing hide and seek. However, after some time, they came to the conclusion that this was not the case. A search was conducted by the cops. They found him after 22 hours, but they were shocked to discover that he was not alone…
Extremely Concerned
Kaydon and his family live in a small community. Top of the World, their hometown, is located in Blount County, Tennessee. Kaydon’s parents don’t mind if he plays alone as long as he doesn’t go too far without asking permission. Unfortunately, the sun had set by the time they realized Kaydon was still missing on April 23, 2018.
He Didn’t Come Home
His parents were understandably concerned about his absence. He would usually be home by 6 p.m. They suspected he was having fun outside, as he usually did, but when they couldn’t find him at home that evening, things became serious.
A Good Boy
But who is Kaydon Leach, exactly? He was a pleasant, good little boy, according to his family, who enjoyed playing outside and doing outdoor activities with his pets. Chula, his black and white terrier, was named after him. And, as is typical of a boy of his age, they both get themselves into a lot of trouble.
Not Taking A Risk
His parents initially assumed he was simply hiding inside their house. However, they quickly realized their error. That’s why they called the Blount County Sheriff, Mr. James Lee Berrong, right away. Because it was getting cold and dark outside, the parents did not want to wait any longer and take any more chances. They were well aware that Kaydon lacked a coat.
A Missing Child
If their kid goes missing, any parent would lose their mind. This is the worst nightmare they’ve ever had. It is only natural for parents to want to protect their children. So you can imagine his parents’ terror when the cops arrived.
Bad Gut Feeling
They had no idea where Kaydon was or why he had run away if he had. But they were dead set on finding him and bringing him back to their house. Something strange has clearly occurred. They had a gut feeling about it, despite the fact that they had no proof or traces of his whereabouts.
No Time to Lose
The Sheriff of the County was well aware of this. That’s why he dispatched a rescue team as well as a team to help spread the word about Kaydon. They must wait for at least 24 hours before declaring a person missing, according to the law. This was not the case because they lived in a close-knit community where everyone knew everyone.
Trying To Be Optimistic
His parents were irritated and concerned that he had become disoriented. He even forgot to bring his coat. He could be shivering in the middle of the night! The Sheriff tried to push the worst-case scenario out of his mind. Instead of assuming the worst, he acted quickly and offered the family all the assistance he could.
The Missing Boy’s Profile
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation confirmed a child was missing at 7 p.m. It was on the front page of the newspaper. According to the Sheriff’s office, they distributed photos of Kaydon so that people could recognize him. This allowed other community volunteers to search for him as well. They took note of his last known location. He was last seen around 6 p.m.
His Description
His parents reported that Kaydon was approximately 4 feet tall, weighed approximately 30 kg or 60 pounds, and had brown hair and blue eyes. Aside from these items, they also provided the Sheriff with more details about what he was wearing when he disappeared. He wore blue sweatpants, black socks, and a red shirt.
The Search
A local sheriff’s department replied to a distress call. Meanwhile, nearby McGhee Tyson Airbase came to the rescue with a military Blackhawk helicopter. Shortly after Berrong got the phone call from the Leach family, the outbreak had already begun.
Searching Everywhere
Other than using the chopper to search for the boy, the ground staff was also on scene. The search and rescue team consisted of over a hundred first responders and surveyed over two thousand acres of rugged terrain. However, the question was whether they could locate the boy before night fell.
Grid Searches
The Ground Search Teams, along with the military’s help, were to comb the search area during the night if this was what it took to locate the young boy. Other searches were found as well.
The TBI
Ground teams like the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), Blount County Fire Department, Blount County Search and Rescue Tea, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Blount County Chief Deputy Jeff French, and Blount County Sheriff’s Department all carried out their own grid searches to look for Kaydon.
A Community Comes Together
As news spread that the missing student was found, the community eventually did their part. Integrated Public Alarm & Warning System (IPAWS) alerts were rapidly disseminated by the Blount County Emergency Services in a matter of hours to alert the community.
A Caring Community
When the residents of the city realized that the public got the message, they also behaved. The life of a child was actually at risk here. We think they were reminded of their family members. It must have reached a wide number of people.
Rallying Around
The group was made aware of what happened during the incident, thanks to a Next Door app. This initiative raised the exposure of the company further. Nearby is an online social network used to socialize with neighbors.
News Coverage
Many people provided comprehensive support with the search but were thankful to be still able to contribute. Of the residents, one said that they are a very close group. We strive to support all. I received a telephone call about the case. “I was coming up the mountain from work when I saw the accident. I immediately stopped and helped.
A Helping Hand
Megan Kessler, who lived in the same area as the missing persons, learned of the abduction, so she founded a search and rescue campaign of her own. She provided the participants with food and water. She spoke to WVLT News and said, “We knew it was going to be a long night.” She also said, “We brought coffee, chili, whatever they needed. We wanted to supply it, so we purchased a supply. They wouldn’t let us look, so we had to start from scratch.
A Viral Post
All of the people helped to share the news about this piece of news. The Tennessee Endangered Child Warning also shared a photo of the subject as well as a Facebook message. Also, the researchers identified the presence of Kaydon Leach and reported the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. Channel 10 also broadcasts the story.

In addition to updating the message’s details, it received over 350 feedback and was shared over 2,000 times. The whole group was cooperating in trying to find Shao and Kaydon. News spread like flames!
Time Was Running Out
Despite the available workforce and resources and the local community’s efforts, the search turned up little significance. They didn’t know where the child went. Also, it was then dark and cold.
Getting More Worried
Time was running out, and the authorities were worried that the boy might get ill if he was not found soon. Kaydon did not have sufficient winter clothing to shield him from the cold, so that it might have been deadly for him. This made them more likely to act quickly.
An Urgent Search
It was clear to his family that his skin was getting cold and that he was not dressed enough to keep him warm through the night. This might prove to be fatal to his size and age. It was a priority that he be located at once. This was the stage at which more and more people found out Kaydon’s whereabouts. They all decided on the utmost importance of locating Aaron Vanek. None of the officers wanted to hear about the possible disaster arising out of this case.
The Search Continues
The analysis was conducted for the next hour or two. Examined the area stretching for a half-mile from the Leach household. More evidence needed to be collected in the morning to investigate the landscape in the surrounding area completely.
They Hoped He Was Okay
Of course, his parents were concerned about their son’s disappearance. They were angry, terrified, and even guilty about the fact that he was playing outside unsupervised. It took a while, but he was finally found to be in good health. What occurred?
A Dedicated And Close-Knit Community
The community members showed that they were a solid, helpful one by staying up most of the night. The researchers gave out water and snacks to the study volunteers. They helped the first responders out by gathering the toys so they could search for Kaydon.
They Were Determined To Find Him
The investigators knew that Kaydon was alive somewhere. It was just a matter of encouragement, motivation, and more motivation. They refused to give up on the task until they successfully achieved Kaydon’s safe return to the family. They expect to do so.
The Daylight Comes
After the sun went down, it was easier to hunt for the missing child. As the hunt for her was still on, no one lost hope. They all refused to give up hope that the baby would return safely.
Losing Time
As the crews began to think of places to look for Kaydon, it was time for them all to go looking for Kaydon again. Both of his parents were worried that Kaydon was hungry, lost, and missing. Everyone was hoping he was okay.
No Stone Left Unturned
The search crews searched in the lake because it was fair to assume that he may have fallen in or drowned there. While he vanished, they did not see him there. As the ground search was conducted, the helicopter continued to maintain surveillance of its position.
Covering All Grounds
After inspecting the lake, they decided to look at the hillsides and the numerous abandoned buildings in the area. It was likely that Kaydon had taken refuge in one of those buildings to keep himself safe from the cold. Unfortunately, he wasn’t noticed there either.
Still Missing
The morning hours went by, and they still had no way to go where Kaydon Leach was. His people were trying to think of where else he could have gone. Is there something suspicious that might have happened? It seemed like an impossibility to the people in their group.
His Parents Didn’t Understand
It did not make much sense to his parents why he had vanished all of a sudden. After all, he knew his curfew and how far he was allowed to go. Everyone suspected something wasn’t going to add up here.
Thinking Outside The Box
The rescuers tried to think like a little boy to find out where Kaydon may have gone while playing outside. This just made them think beyond the box. They have tried to look at locations and places that they would not have considered otherwise. Apart from the abandoned houses, the forests were also tested. They didn’t know it yet, so they were getting warmer and warmer.
Getting Close
They started looking for abandoned buildings in the city. They went into the woods to keep looking. They were not aware of the fact that they had actually come closer and closer to Kaydon. They had the impression that they were finally on something.
The Woods
When the crew walked into the woods not far from the neighborhood, they made sure they searched the entire area. If Kaydon wasn’t there, they were officially out of ideas about where else he could have gone. The afternoon was going on, and everyone knew they would get trapped when it was nighttime again. Time ran out, but they heard a peculiar noise in the woods that caught their attention.
A Startling Noise
It was the afternoon. All the volunteers involved realized that they had to keep looking until it got dark and the night fell. The clock was ticking, very literally. Suddenly, all of them heard a noise. It came from inside the bush. It instantly sparked their attention. What if he was asking for help?
The Growl
Around 22 hours after this young boy had gone missing, the rescuers eventually noticed something helpful. They all heard a groan from somewhere in the bush. As they made their way to their source, they could hear that they grew louder and stronger. And though they didn’t know what they could see, they kept walking. It sounded like a growling dog, so they felt the need to investigate. They were deep in the forests, and there were a lot of chances to play.
What Animal Was It?
They didn’t know what they could see, but they kept track of the sound. Since it sounded like a dog growling to them, they decided they had to find out what it was like. They were deep in the woods, though, so there were infinite possibilities about what sound could really be.
Found At Last
Volunteers and rescuers came to the location where the sound came from. It was then that Kaydon was heard! They were just half a mile away from his place. This meant that the night before, he didn’t go too far.
Who Stayed With Him?
The young boy must have lost his bearings, felt paralyzed by terror, and decided to stay right there. But the thing that surprised everyone was that he wasn’t on his own when he went missing. No, somebody remained with him.
The Protector
Around 3:30 p.m. that day, Kaydon Leach has officially been found about 22 hours after he disappeared. As they spotted him, they also saw what was going to make the crying sound. It was his black and white terrier, Chula! “The dog groaned at the rescuers as they approached Kaydon, so the dog is a protector,” said BCSO Deputy Chief Jeff French. Chula did her best to keep Kaydon safe for the whole night they spent in the woods.
Chula Kept Him Safe
In a quote, BCSO Chief Deputy Jeff French said, “The dog groaned at the rescuers as they approached Kaydon, so the dog is a protector.” Chula really did everything in her power to keep Kaydon safe and sound all night while they were in the woods.
Some Medical Attention Needed
He didn’t look good when they found the missing child. After asking Kaydon how he felt, the only thing he told them was, “Freezing.” He was wearing nothing more than a gray sweater and a black shirt. This explains why that night was so cold. His skin was still purple and cold on top of that.
They Got Help
On top of that, the search team asked him where he was going to stay. When they were given the address, they told Kaydon that they would take him to safety. He needed medical attention, but they still had to take care of Chula’s dog.
Very Relieved
Before Kaydon could be brought home by these responders, he was first taken to Blount Memorial Hospital to be examined by medical staff. They wanted to make sure he didn’t have hypothermia and other health problems until he was dropped off at home.
Couldn’t Believe The Good News
His family feels really relieved at last to be reunited with the little boy. They had a hard time believing that Chula had been there all the time. It all sounded like a film or a novel!
An Official Statement
While Kaydon was being checked out at the Blount Memorial Hospital, the little boy’s family agreed to issue an official statement. At first, they had no details about his condition or the cause of his disappearance. Still, his family wanted to thank the outstanding local volunteers and rescue teams who went beyond and beyond to help them find their son.
